We SAVED a Horribly HOOKED Turtle!
On a quick fishing mission on Thanksgiving we encountered a female Red Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) laying on the edge of a community fishing pond. It was a really cold day, so not appropriate weather for her to be laying out in the elements. Cole went to on to further inspect the turtle and quickly realized that she was in really bad shape. It seemed as if she had been caught by an angler and the angler simply just cut the line instead of trying to unhook her, leaving a large amount of hardware inside of the turtle's mouth. Over time, at some point the hook turned and came through her eye and hooked into her leg, so every time she moved her leg it kept trying to pull the hardware through her eye which rendered her left eye useless. We decided to take her home and try to remove all of the hardware to save the turtle's life. When we found her she seemed to be on her last leg and not being able to effectively move to get out of the elements would have probably been the end of her. We managed to relieve her of all of the hardware and kept her in captivity for 10 days so she could recuperate and become physically fit to be released back into the wild. We apologize if you found any of the hook removing scenes graphic, but that was the only way to get everything out and ensure her survival.
